ATLANTA — The family of a man killed by police at a popular Buckhead restaurant is demanding the release of the full video of his death, which happened more than two years ago. On May 18, 2022, Atlanta Police shot and killed 22-year-old Nygil Cullins at Fogo De Chão. Investigators said Cullins, a former employee, shot a security guard, prompting an APD officer to shoot and kill Cullins near the front of the restaurant. The family and the NAACP challenge that narrative from law enforcement. The family has maintained that Nygil was in mental health distress and not breaking any laws when he was tackled by restaurant security and killed by Atlanta Police.
Cullins’ family and friends, alongside the Atlanta NAACP, have been protesting at APD headquarters on numerous occasions for the release of the body camera footage. Atlanta police have told media, local activists, and lawyers that they are not releasing the video until the investigation is done. “His name needs to be cleared, and justice needs to be served,” his mother, Mya Cullins, said. She stated that the family has received little to no answers from the police.
“He was in mental health distress and he was shot, and they stood over and shot some more, so we need full transparency,” Gerald Griggs, president of the Atlanta NAACP, said.
In their quest for answers and justice, the family of Nygil Cullins has filed a federal lawsuit to investigate the circumstances surrounding his death. The lawsuit, filed in the Northern District of Georgia on Friday, alleges violations of the law relating to the shooting death of Nygil Cullins.
